Haynesville Shale

The Haynesville Shale is a rock formation mainly composed of consolidated clay-sized particles deposited and buried in northwest Louisiana and East Texas more than 170 million years ago during the Upper Jurassic age. It is characterized by ultra-low permeability but has a high porosity compared to other shales.

The Haynesville Shale came into prominence in 2008 as a potentially major shale gas resource. Producing natural gas from the Haynesville Shale involves drilling wells from 10,000 feet and to 13,000 feet deep. The formation is deeper in areas nearer the Gulf of Mexico. The Haynesville Shale has recently been estimated to be the largest natural gas field in the contiguous 48 states with an estimated 250 trillion cubic feet of recoverable gas. Production has boomed since late March 2008, creating a number of new millionaires in the Shreveport, Louisiana region.

BHP says waiting period for $12bn PetroHawk bid cut

PERTH (miningweekly.com) − Diversified giant BHP Billiton would be filing its takeover offer documents for shale gas company Petrohawk Energy with the US Securities and Exchange Commission on Tuesday, after the mandatory waiting period was reduced.
The mining conglomerate said that it had received a notice from the US Federal Trade Commission of the early termination of the waiting period, under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvement Act.
Earlier this month, BHP made a $12.1-billion play for Petrohawk Energy, giving it access to oil and shale gas assets in Texas and Louisiana. BHP is offering $38.75 a share, which values the US shale gas producer at $15.1-billion, including the assumption of net debt.
The transaction would provide BHP with operated positions in the three world-class resource plays of the Eagle Ford and Haynesville shales, as well as the Permian basin.
Petrohawk’s assets cover around one-million net acres in Texas and Louisiana, with an estimated 2011 net production of around 950-million cubic feet equivalent per day, or 158 000 barrels of oil equivalent per day.
